Download deadpool for pc. Sometimes the serial number is here, especially in later models. For the exact date on your gun request the letter from S&W Historian Roy. Jun 22, 2008 - Is there anywhere online where i can research vintage S&W serial numbers? I have been pretty successful in finding dates for old Smiths. Mar 27, 2018 - I've got an old S&W snub nosed.38. Right side of barrel: 'S.& W. Left side: 'SMITH&WESSON'. Frame numbers and barrel support match. Your Model 60 dates to about 1980-1981. The serial number ranges don't go any further and to get an exact date you would have to pay Roy Jinks $50 for a history letter. If you want a S&W M17 you should go to the Smith & Wesson Forum (www.smith-wessonforum.com) and look through those classifieds.

S&W serial number. Date manuf?
I've got an old S&W snub nosed .38. Right side of barrel: 'S.& W. SPL. Left side: 'SMITH&WESSON'. Frame numbers and barrel support match. Serial # on butt is 1018. That's it. Nothing else. No one but no one can tell me what I've got as far as year. 'There has to be a prefix number'. Nope, it's very clearly stamped. Been on all the S&W sites. Most are very confusing. Any ideas.

What model is this? J frame? K frame?
Is it a numbered model?

That number just straight up for a .38 Special Hand Ejector M&P falls in the 1899-1902 range. Not saying that's exactly what you have.

I don't know the frame and see no number model, but it's a 3 screw. Thanks!Originally Posted by akajunI have the smith and Wesson catalogue and can look it up for you

Look here. It's a very well explained guide for identifying your S&W.

3 visible screws in the sideplate..sounds like a postwar 38, but pre model 10. That's assuming a swing out cylinder, hand ejector. Without a pic, it's a little difficult. I am going to check out above links. PB

Looks like an early 36. Doesn't have the model number on the yoke/crane area?

I'm not a gun person by any stretch of the imagination, so explain to me what a yoke/crane is.

Open the cylinder, and look at the part of the frame that is normally covered.

It is a 4 screw. The 4th screw is hidden by the grip.

Actually, it is a five screw. The fifth screw is forward of the trigger guard. It is a pre- model 36, Chief's Special, flat latch. Manufactured starting 1951, fifth screw eliminated in 1953.
The serial number range is in the first two years of production. Information from Standard catalog of Smith & Wesson. - Diamond

Thank you everyone. Very informative. This was given to me many years ago. Now onto deciding what to do with it. Probably back in the drawer.

You can look on the site 'gun broker,' and get an idea of the value. S & W have increased in recent years.

It's a great little nightstand gun. 38 Specials are nice rounds to shoot and the Smith is the perfect gun to shoot them with!
